Ever wondered what excellent Balinese food tastes like? If so, make sure to spend a night in Warung Bambu. The nasi campur (mixed rice) is a bounty of fresh vegetables, soybean cake (tempe), brochettes (satay), fish and chicken, with a unique blend of local spices. The curries, cooked with love in coconut milk, are authentically delicious, but the most special is the pesan — fresh tuna fillet marinated in spices and cooked in a banana leaf. A wide range of grilled fish and seafood is also available. Even the fruit basket is a feast for the senses, including local fruits such as the astringent salak or the honey-sweet sawu.
Warung Bambu is also a mini-gallery, displaying original paintings that add colour to the homey atmosphere created by the bamboo tables and the deck opening onto the rice fields. Culture lovers should make sure they don’t miss the dance shows, which are offered twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays — these are original choreographies based on Balinese tradition, performed with feeling and creativity by local artists. Dance classes can also be arranged.
Beate and Nyoman, the tireless owners of Warung Bambu, are fighting for a clean environment, and have created a waste management project working with local communities called CV Sapulidi. They also run original tours around the area (see What to Do, and are ready to share their culinary miracles in their cooking classes. |
